Wellington Supreme Court

Over the last few months, I have been photographing women who work in the construction industry for an exhibition that is to be put on by the Wellington branch of  NAWIC (National Association of Women in Construction). Today was the last shoot of the series and indeed pretty much a last minute shoot as the exhibition is less than two weeks away now. Today I was photographing one of the structural engineers involved in the construction of the Wellington Supreme Court. I have never been inside the building before and was amazed at the design of the courtroom itself. So much so that I had to shoot a few extra photos to post here without my model of the day. The room is a dome, so perspective looks a little out on the images but I like them just as they are.

If anyone is interested in viewing the exhibition "Celebrating Women in Construction" it is open from Sept 18 through to the 23rd from 10am to 6pm daily at the Thistle Hall Gallery, Upper Cuba St. I have photographed most of the images in the exhibition.

From the roof top...

I am currently working on a series of images for NAWIC (National Association of Women In Construction). They are having an exhibition soon and I am shooting the images for them. I have been to all sorts of sites so far, power substations, building sites, plumbing showrooms and today a roof top! Thankfully it was an easy access roof and I didn't have to climb any ladders or scaffolding like I have had to do recently. Once on the roof I was captivated by all the reflections in the surrounding buildings. I could have stayed there for hours photographing them! The following images are all I managed to get in while doing the job I was there for.

Lines

I have been getting migraine headaches that alter my sight. Just before they come I get lines in my vision - everywhere I look there are lines and I can't get away from them. They never seem to last more than 15 minutes or so but they have made me way more aware of just how many lines there are around us.

National Tobacco Company Building - Ahuriri

As we were driving around Napier we spotted the most beautiful art deco building I think I have ever seen, the photos really don't do it justice. The sun was shining on all its brasswork and it just about jumped out at us saying "photograph me!". So we stopped the car and out came the cameras. Was probably quite a site, two photographers standing in the middle of the road taking photos of a building, glancing sideways every few minutes to make sure there were no cars about to run them over.

The floral work on this building was just stunning. What looked like raupo(bull rushes), paprus and roses all done in such a tasteful and beautiful way. I googled the building (as you do) to find out some information about it. It dates back to 1932-33. The National Tobacco Company building was built after the devastation of the 1931 Napier earthquake and was designed by Louis Hay. At some point it was taken over by Rothmans and the name on the facade of the building was changed. Since they are no longer using the building, the name on the facade has been restored to its original.
