Fire Spinners

I attended the PSNZ Central Regional Convention last weekend and on the Friday night they had a real treat organised for us. A team of fire spinners were in the park to entertain us with this skills. Not only did they do this but they were willing to do repeats, or move away from obstacles like rubbish bins etc. so that we go the shot we were after!

I had done some research on how to photograph fire spinners before going to the convention and learned about rear curtain syncing with the flash. I had set my camera up to do this and then put on my speedlite and it didn't work! I knew it was working earlier so was a little flustered not wanting to miss the show. So I checked the settings again and my camera politely told me NO. They won't work with the speedlite, get it off. I had no choice but to listen to the camera, so having removed it I used the on-board flash and everything worked a treat!

Next time I will know what to do without the stress of trying to get it right during the show. The first time is always tricky but once learned, the technique can be repeated easily.
